The exhibition ‘Portuguese Craft Production: The Timeliness of Ancestral Know-How’ has as its guiding thread the mission behind the Saber Fazer Portugal National Programme, implemented by the Directorate General for the Arts – Ministry of Culture. The recognition of the timeliness and relevance of craft production based on ancestral knowledge for contemporary society, is structured around four axes: the everyday meaning of these productions, respect for the landscape, valorisation of this heritage, and economic resilience.

In addition to these four axes that cut across the traditional arts and crafts sector, there are characteristics that are common to all objects of ancestral origin, exemplified by specific utensils that highlight them.

The Symbolic, Material Intelligence, Technical Meticulousness, and Shelter are fluidly manifested and interwoven in the different artefacts/objects, revealing the mastery of artisans in responding to the needs of societies at any given time.

This exhibition is part of the Territorial Intervention Laboratory Covilhã: Weaving Knowledge, under which various activities will take place in partnership with the Covilhã Design Triennale, the Wool Museum, and the National Arts Plan.
