The LINA x DAE Spring School is held in conjunction with Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI) and Covilhã Design Triennial. The program features two simultaneous workshops led by LINA fellows, organised in collaboration with students from UBI and DAE – Design Academy Eindhoven.
ZÊZERE RIVERSCAPING

This workshop invites students to explore the Zêzere River and its watersheds through a cultural urbanist lens. Participants will collaboratively map both visible and hidden layers of water use, analyzing its role from multiple perspectives. The focus will be on understanding the interwoven relationship between water, urban life, and culture in Covilhã, as well as its broader influence on the Zêzere region. By uncovering the dynamic interactions between people and water, the workshop aims to reveal both tangible and invisible forces shaping the area’s identity and future.
ECHOES OF THE EARTH

This interdisciplinary workshop encourages students to explore design through the lens of local, social, and ecological contexts, using them as guiding principles for future projects. In Covilhã, participants will collaborate across disciplines—including rural and urban food systems, material design, and sound exploration—to co-create innovative ideas. Through a variety of hands-on activities, we will engage with local knowledge, materials, culture, and food to better understand the bioregion’s unique capacities. Walking tours will serve as a primary method for discovering community ties, individual connections, and neighborhood dynamics.

szabadonbalaton (“free Balaton”) is a research-based ecological cultural initiative and cross-sectoral collaboration of artists and scientists hosted by PAD Foundation, with the aim to draw attention to the ecological needs and risks of Central European largest lake, Lake Balaton in Hungary. szabadonbalaton’s working formats have a multidisciplinary approach, focusing not only on individual problems but also on the interrelations of various climate and ecological challenges caused by human interventions. szabadonbalaton conceptualised and co-produced the ecological cultural program series BALATORIUM for the European Capital of Culture Veszprém-Balaton 2023, involving numerous institutions, artists, scientists and experts, attracting thousands of visitors throughout 2022-2023.
GUBAHÁMORI is an architectural and urban design studio. Their work focuses on the relationship between natural and non-natural habitats. In most cases, they seek the collaboration of professionals from the natural and social sciences and the fine arts.
The studio develops comprehensive strategies to promote climate resilience in the built environment, employing a multiscalar approach from territorial to human scale objects. Their toolkit includes flexible programming, cost-effective, and passive architectural solutions with minimal technological interventions. In 2021, they were invited to the Polish Pavilion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale (The Sacred Species). In 2022, their Kútház adaptive reuse project was nominated for the international Piranesi Prize. In 2023, they participated in the BALATORIUM program series, focusing on the futurescapes of beach and waterfront reconstructions.

Planting Solidarity is an international association promoting the visibility of food and land solidarity projects.
Workshop tutors:
Marie Tina Asoh has roots in Cameroon and Madagascar, but grew up in Canada. After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture (2018), Marie Tina moved to Switzerland in pursuit of further education and practical experience. Marie Tina has worked for various landscape architecture offices while pursuing her MAS in Housing Development at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (2022). In 2023, Marie Tina founded Planting Solidarity, and has been committed to storytelling through research, documentation and music.
Daniel Boris was born in Fortaleza, Brazil, living in Porto, Portugal, since 2017. Currently developing a PhD thesis at the Center for Research on Territory, Transport and Environment (CITTA-FEUP) about the correlations of Sustainable Food Systems and Spatial Planning. Interested in multiple references from urban planning, photography and literature, and have already participated in a collective artistic project in Porto named Des/oriente (2023).
Luma Vidal Weinhardt, with roots from Brazil, has ventured through the fields of economics and industrial design. Now pursuing a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design at Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel, Switzerland, she aims to merge design with principles of circularity, sustainability, and social responsibility. Luma strives to create solutions resonating with both individuals and communities, driving progress towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
Angela Häusermann was born in Switzerland and spent her developing years in Portugal. She is the co-founder of Planting Solidarity. Angela’s academic background focused on Economics and Spatial Development, which led her to write her Master’s Thesis on “Experiments and Improvisation in City Development”. Her working experience in organic plant breeding and interest in food systems led her to explore the themes of associative democracy, collective organization, various exchange formats, and land as a commons.
